Scholar. Educator. Scientist.

Welcome!

Dr. Symone A. Gyles

Symone Gyles, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of science education in the School of Education at the University of California, Irvine.

My research focuses on the the co-design of community-based, justice-centered and culturally-responsive science pedagogy and curriculum through community-engaged research. Generally, my research commits to re-designing and re-imagining K-12 science education and curriculum as a space that engages students’ home, community and cultural knowledge, experiences, and values as assets to learning. I believe that science classrooms can be spaces that imagine and work toward more just and sustainable futures

Specifically my research focuses on:

  • Investigating the intersections of community-based science, environmental justice and social justice to promote equitable science teaching and learning

  • The process of creating and impact of designed curriculum and pedagogies that utilize lenses of culture, power, and justice

  • Re-designing and re-imagining K-12 science learning as a space that engages students’ home, community and cultural knowledge, experiences and values as assets
